Except, perhaps, because of a really, really decrepit mail box.
The old mailbox (circa 1960s???) was a metal mailbox attached to a metal post. The joint where the mailbox and post connected had been bent too many times, probably from too many home run attempts during mailbox baseball. When you bend a metal tube too many times, it breaks. The old mailbox wasn't broken off the post... yet. It was only a matter of days. The mailbox was just sort-of hanging from the post and I don't imagine the mail carrier was too happy with that.
So, during our monthly work exchange Dori and I replaced the mailbox.
Tim had received a basic white metal mailbox at a Yankee Swap at his workplace a couple years ago, so all I needed was the post. This one was the most economical and seemed to be one that Dori and I could do on our own in one morning.

While it did take longer than we had expected, we did finish by lunch. I'm happy with it. The other good thing is that our house is now clearly marked with our address, making it much easier to find the place.
I've been looking for metallic mailbox covers. I haven't been able to find any in the stores, but there are a lot of places that carry them online. My favorite place is Flag Fables. They seem to have the biggest selection and the most reasonable prices.
The problem is that so many of them are very "country" themed and that's not really the theme of our house. I do, however, like this one for the fall. There are a couple others that I really like. I will be placing an order today!

The final thing I need to consider is what I want to put at the base of the mailbox. I'm thinking I should put some spring-blooming bulbs in now, before the ground freezes, then I'll deal with what will follow next spring.
Next up - maybe some outdoor lighting along the driveway...???

I agree with your sentiment of the look of your mailbox having an effect on the overall ambiance of your house. You want everything to be uniform and similar to the theme you are trying to get across to your guest.--Glenn Spielmann from http://www.stonewallacresbandb.com
Liked your blog! Yes lighting up the driveway would be a great touch.
